Recovered from your complaint? These five tips help you hold on to your progress and keep the complaint from coming back.
Your complaint is gone. Good news, but not the end point. Right after a recovery your body is often not as resilient as it seems. Anyone who then does too much too soon regularly sees the complaint come back. This is how you hold on to your progress.
You feel good, so you want to do everything again. Do that in steps. Increase your load by about 10% a week, whether that is running, lifting or sport. That way your body gets used to the increasing load without becoming overloaded.
The exercises from your treatment programme are not only meant to get rid of the complaint. They keep the muscles around the vulnerable area strong. Schedule them two to three times a week, even when nothing is bothering you.
The best protection against a relapse is a body that can handle more than you ask of it day to day. Strength training increases that reserve. Clients who keep training after their recovery are up to 90% less likely to relapse.
A bit of muscle soreness after exertion is normal. Pain that increases during the activity, or that is still there the next morning, is a signal to take a step back. Better one quiet week than three months of starting over.
